Antarctica and the Proof that the Earth is Round
Introduction
Context: In December 2024, Géran Campanella, a YouTuber from the channel Géranisum (164,000 subscribers), travels to Antarctica to prove the Earth is flat. Objective: Present his transformative experience and debunk the flat Earth myth through scientific and historical facts. For years, he has created videos on this topic and accomplished something few in his position have done—a unique experiment. The trip was expensive, but he didn’t return empty-handed. In reality, Antarctica experiences polar days for several weeks between November and February and polar nights between May and August due to the Earth’s 24° tilt relative to the ecliptic plane. However, the model accepted by flat Earth proponents is entirely impossible to achieve. Antarctica is depicted as a kind of ice wall encircling the flat plane. Géran went there and conducted a solar experiment with our star, which remains visible 24/7 in the sky, proving that this model only works with a spherical Earth. He subsequently changed his stance and explained to his community that he was mistaken.
The Experiment in Antarctica
Context
Polar Phenomenon: Between November and February, Antarctica experiences polar days (sun visible 24/7) due to the Earth’s 24° tilt relative to the ecliptic plane.Polar Night: From May to August, the region is plunged into continuous darkness.
Solar Experiment
Methodology: Géran Campanella observes the Sun’s movement, which remains visible continuously in the sky.Result: This observation proves the Earth is spherical, as it is incompatible with a flat Earth model.Impact: Géran publicly admits his mistake and convinces his community that the Earth is round.
The Flat Earth Myth in the Middle Ages
Historical Reality
Misconception: Contrary to popular belief, medieval scholars did not think the Earth was flat.Origin of the Myth: This stereotype was created during the Renaissance and amplified in the 19th century to discredit the medieval era.
Scientific Evidence
Antiquity: For 2,500 years, observations and calculations (e.g., Eratosthenes) have demonstrated that the Earth is spherical.Consensus: The Earth’s sphericity has been an established scientific fact for centuries.
Flat Earth Proponents’ Arguments
Doctored Photos: Flat Earth advocates claim that images of the Earth are falsified to hide a conspiracy.Reality: Images are retouched for scientific (precision) and artistic (aesthetic) reasons, but they are based on authentic data.
History of Earth Images
Key Milestones
1946: The first photograph of Earth from space, taken by a V2 missile.1972: The Blue Marble photo from Apollo 17 becomes a global icon.Today: Modern images (e.g., from the Terra satellite) are composites combining thousands of files for realistic representation.
Conspiracy Theories
Flat Earth Society
Argumentation: Uses image retouching to claim the Earth is flat and governments are lying.Weakness: Ignores overwhelming scientific evidence (observations, calculations, satellite data).
Concealment for Security Reasons
Hypothesis: NASA might retouch certain areas for confidentiality or security reasons.Limitation: This does not challenge the Earth’s sphericity.
Conclusion
Reality of Images: Retouching of Earth images is justified by scientific and artistic needs, but it does not prove the Earth is flat.Irrefutable Evidence: Observations in Antarctica, historical calculations, and satellite data confirm the Earth is spherical.Invitation: Check NASA’s images or conduct a solar experiment in Antarctica to verify for yourself.
